For the first time in a number of years there are new kingpins in Fermanagh football. Derrygonnelly Harps firmly supplanted Roslea Shamrocks as the best team in the county winning a double with quite a bit to spare. The Harps will no doubt prefer that they are not built up too much coming into the 2016 season but the reality of the situation is that they were hugely impressive in their exploits last year. There appears to be little or no turnover of players and they have a younger brigade of performers who should only get better. They will be favourites for all honours this season and will simply have to deal with that mantle.
For Roslea this could well be a pivotal year. Much was made last year of the loss of James Sherry and Niall Cosgrove and there is no doubt they felt their absence. They still have a very good squad however with the brilliant Sean Quigley the most dangerous forward in the county alongside his mercurial yet supremely talented older brother Seamus. They remain a team who can hurt you if they gain enough possession and that will be the primary aim of new boss and ex Tyrone star Brian Gormley.
The two promoted teams, Irvinestown and Teemore, will be looking to get off to a good start to life in division one. The Shamrocks have been something of a yo yo team in recent years and have failed to establish themselves in the top tier. They have a new man in charge in the shape of Tommy Clarke who will look for some of his younger players to start to inspire the team. Teemore are still heavily reliant on a swathe of over 30’s and while these players are more than good enough to hold their own the fact is that during a long season there will need to be more salient contributions from elsewhere. Irvinestown were very impressive last season in winning their own double collecting both the Intermediate Championship and division two title.
Shane Goan did an excellent job in charge and he has put together a well disciplined side who play to a good system and who have some exciting forwards. No doubt they will find life more difficult this season but they have the capabilities to consolidate a place in division one.
Maguiresbridge had an up and down season in 2015 but ultimately avoiding relegation was something of an achievement given the precarious position they found themselves at one stage of the year. If they are to improve they will need to shore up the defence as they were porous in a lot of games. At the other end they have a very dangerous forward line with Sean Corrigan and Daniel Teague one of the best full forward line combinations in the county.
Tempo suffered relegation in the championship after losing to Erne Gaels by a point and Ederney by two points and they were also pulled into a relegation battle that they negotiated their way out of. Sean Breen takes over the reigns and one of the first things he will want to do is get his best players on the pitch. Tempo have lots of potential and a mean defence and if they can get all guns firing in attack they should be a force further up the table.
Erne Gaels set the pace in the league last year and produced some really fabulous football. They bowed out in the championship at the semi final stage to Roslea after a replay and their league challenge somewhat petered out. They possess a very strong squad however and should be looking at 2016 as the year they can make a big breakthrough.
Ederney reached a league final last year where they lost to Derrygonnelly, the same team who put them out of the championship after a replay. They did admirably well to keep their commitment levels after their championship exit. They have former Tyrone goalkeeper, Finbarr McConnell, in charge and while the league will no doubt be high on the agenda the championship is what this group of talented players crave.
Belcoo have been dicing with the drop for a number of seasons and are another club who have went outside in appointing their new manager. Tyrone native Hugh Donnelly will want his side to secure points early in the season. Belcoo were hit and miss last season and will once again compete in the Intermediate championship. They need to show a greater consistency to go with their undoubted ability.
Devenish are another club who will be looking to make a long awaited break through in 2016. Again there is no doubting the talent within their squad and they have consistently been operating at the top of the division but championship success has eluded them.
Former player Malachy Cullen will take charge this season and will be hoping that his side can continue their impressive league form and build on that to secure that much coveted championship.
