Irvinestown 3-06
Belcoo 1-06

New boys Irvinestown are two from two as they saw off Belcoo at home over the weekend. The ability to take their goals was the difference for Irvinestown as the landed two in the first half to build up a sizeable lead that Belcoo never looked like threatening.
After the game Irvinestown boss, Shane Goan expressed his delight at the start that his team has got off to in division one.
“We haven’t played at this level for a long time so it is good to get off to this type of start. We talked about it and we have trained hard and we wanted to really start the league well and thankfully we have managed to do that.”
All in all, Irvinestown showed much greater athleticism and purpose than Belcoo over the course of the hour and they were constantly able to get runners from deep and this tactic caused Belcoo untold problems.
The sides shared the first four points of the game with Ronan Ormsby registering both for the home side and Johnny Feeley and Matthew McAloon tying things up for Belcoo. That was to be as good as it got for the visitors however as the home side demonstrated their tenacity in the tackle to build a strong advantage on the scoreboard. Two turnovers led to 1-01 in quick succession. The purposeful Ronan Campbell split the posts before the dangerous Ormsby supplied a killer pass for Tiernan Daly to fist home
Irvinestown dominated the last 15 minutes of the first half with Paul McGrath the sole score for Belcoo. The home side meanwhile landed another goal when the hugely impressive Joey Millar cut through the heart of the Belcoo defence to create an opening for himself and although the ball momentarily spilled from his grasp he showed excellent awareness to finish to the corner of the net.
Seven points to the good at the break Irvinestown were fully in control and played controlled football in the second half. There was a brief moment when it looked like the visitors might take something from the game when Feeley rifled to the back of the net from a quick free to put just three points between the teams.
Irvinestown hit back straight away with a point through Ormsby and the same player put the game beyond doubt when he broke through for a well deserved goal with time almost up. It leaves Belcoo with one point before this weekend’s double header and fixtures at home to basement club Ederney and away to Roslea.
For Irvinestown they face Teemore tomorrow night with Erne Gaels the opposition on Sunday;
“It is going to be a tricky weekend for us. Ronan Ormsby is getting married on Saturday. We will be aiming for two wins but I think if we got six points out of a possible eight we would be happy,” Goan explained before concluding;
“We really just wanted to continue on from last year. That was our aim and the boys have been working hard and they are believing in themselves and I also have to say that things have been going well for us to so we are delighted with the start but we are not getting carried away at all.”
