The Swim Ireland Irish Age Group Division 2 takes place in UL Sport, Limerick from Thursday June 30 to Sunday July 3. The Enniskillen Lakelanders have five Senior Squad members qualified for the event – once again supported by Cavanagh Kelly.
This National Age Group Meet consists of 32 events with 309 heats and 2319 gala entries from hundreds of swimmers from all over Ireland and it is a great achievement for these swimmers to reach this level.
Lewis McCartney (2002) is competing in his second Irish Age Group event following his introduction to the national scene last year and will swim in six events.
As a result of great times in the Summer Gala Lewis is seeded at number one swimmer in the 2001 & 2002 year group for the 1500m Freestyle although most swimmers will make time improvements in the end of season finals and Lewis will need to be at his best to reach the podium.
Lewis is seeded fifth in the 400m Freestyle and like the 1500m this is a Heat Declared Winner event. With only eight lanes available in the final at the University of Limerick pool Lewis will need to give his all to make finals in the 100m and 200m Freestyle or the 100m and 200m Breaststroke – all very competitive sprints.
After a year plagued with injury Caitlin Martin (2001) has fought her way back into a national competition.
Her commitment to training has seen Caitlin qualify in her two favourite events as well as the 200m Individual Medley – the first time at a National Level.
The Lakelander is seeded 12th in the 200m Backstroke giving her a great opportunity to reach the final to finish the year on a high. She has also a great chance in the 100m Backstroke where a two second improvement would also see her in a final.
Niamh O’Kane was born in 2003 and will swim in the 2002 & 2003 section leaving her younger than many of the competitors.
Her recent improvements have left her with an outside opportunity of making the final of the 100m Butterfly.
Good performances in the 100m and 400m Freestyle will see her times well improved and add to the experience that she has been building all season culminating in her first swim in the UL Sport pool.
Jake Cadden has progressed rapidly this year into the Senior squad of the Enniskillen Lakelanders with his performances in the AquaSprints (swimming up) and the Swim Ulster Qualifying Galas.
Jake, born in 2005, is the youngest swimmer from the Lakelanders to attend the event and will be swimming 100m and 200m Backstroke and the 200m Breaststroke.
The event will give Jake great experience on the National stage as he improves after being awarded one of the Coach’s cups last week.
Connor McKenzie will be swimming in the 2001 & 2002 group and has qualified for several events but is only able to compete in 400m and 100m Freestyle to due prior commitments. Born in 2002, Connor is seeded in the top 10 for both events with his best opportunity being in the 100m Freestyle where Connor has improved his technique immensely in the last year with the help of the club coaches and Swim Ulster’s Mark Craig.
One of the Club Coaches, Fionna Martin, will be poolside in Limerick helping the swimmers with their warm up and final stroke adjustments while all the entrants families will be in the spectator area or helping out poolside and everyone from Fermanagh will be cheering on the local swimmers.
