The 61st Erne Head took place a week later than planned due to the adverse weather but still attracted some 60 crews from throughout Ireland for some keenly contested top class rowing.
Enniskillen Royal Boat Club head coach Derek Holland commented: “It was disappointing to have to postpone from the original date when he had a record entry and we did lose a few very competitive crews such as NUIG and Queen’s due to other commitments but equally it was good to get the event staged.”
“The home crews did really well and went on to prove that at the UK Schools Head only 48 hours later.
“Some of our younger crews got some invaluable experience as well so it was a very positive day for the club,” acknowledged the head coach.
Race conditions were good, despite the damp weather.
The event was kicked off with the Trinity University Senior 8, who completed the course in 19 minutes and 17 seconds, finishing first overall. First home representing the club were the boys Junior 18 8.
The Enniskillen Royal BC crew finished the course first in their category and third overall only 47 seconds behind the winning senior 8 as they took advantage of the familiar water.
Not to be out done the Girls Junior 18 8 also finished first in their category beating rivals Colaiste Iognoaid by over a minute completing the course in 22minutes and 39 seconds.
A solid performance was shown from both crews.
The Boys J16 quad missed out on a win to Bann Rowing club, however most of the boys in the quads are only J15 and some even J14. So considering that, they had an excellent race on home water.
Next was the turn of the J16 Girls 8s, who are also very young with most rowers in these crews just starting to row this year. The Girls J16 A boat has been rowing well recently, this was evidenced on Saturday when they completed the course in 23minutes and 53 seconds. The girls had a great row beating Commercial Rowing club’s J16 8 comfortably.
The Girls J16 8 B,C and D boats also had confident rows, being encouraged by family and friends who were cheering from the banks of the river.
This would have been the longest race they have done so far, so winter training in the gym stood them all in good stead.
The 61st Erne Head of the river also saw the Portora Boat Club veteran crews who competed with distinction in the Masters Class.
The Men’s Master A crew missed out on a win to Commercial Rowing club, finishing the course in 23minutes and 27 seconds. The Portora B crew followed closely behind.
Saturday also saw the Portora Women’s Master 8 compete in their first ever race. Having only started rowing at the end of summer, the ladies put in a solid performance, completing the course in style.
Overall, this was a very successful day’s competitive rowing on Lough Erne with the home crews very much to the fore.
