The contract to provide a Floodlit 3G Football pitch and 400 metre athletics track has begun at the St Michael’s College sports grounds on the Cherrymount Link.
The project will also include a new pavilion with changing rooms, showers, toilets, storage and office facilities for the co-ordination of sports events and activities.
In addition the works will include the upgrading of an existing facility to provide a full-sized floodlit GAA grass pitch.
The project has been in planning for some five years after very positive negotiations with the Department of Education and the provision of funding of £1.3 million under the Schools Enhancement Programme.
The contract has been awarded to local Enniskillen firm P J Treacy and Sons and is being managed by local architects Keys and Monaghan who are based in Irvinestown.
The project got underway last Thursday and is expected to be completed in early February 2019.
One of the planning conditions with the project was to undertake an archaeological dig on one of the existing pitches to ascertain if there was any evidence of Crannog life following the discovery of a Crannog during the construction of the nearby Cheryymount Link.
That work was undertaken earlier this year and permission was granted to the College to proceed when no such evidence was found.
Once completed the facility will enhance enormously the potential for the development of all sports including athletics with the availability of a 400 metre running track.
The 3G Pitch will be available for hire to all community groups and sports clubs and is anticipated to be in much demand.
Signing the contract for the new development at the school recently were Mr Mark Henry, Principal, Mr Michael Duffy, Bursar, Mr Martin Treacy of PJ Treacy and Sons and Mr Eamonn Monaghan of Keys and Monaghan Architects.
