The Erne Boxing Club had a busy weekend of championship boxing with siblings Kaci and Caoilfhionn Crowley competing in Dublin and Derry respectively this weekend.
The highlight for the club was Kaci Crowley scoring a brace of wins to lift the National Junior Cadets title and more significantly qualify for the European Schoolgirls Championships in Bulgaria next month.
Erne Boxing Club Head Coach and father of both boxers Sean Crowley commented, “The girls did themselves, the club and coaches proud this weekend.
“Kaci was under immense pressure, she was the big favourite going into the competition but produced two good performances to win her third Irish Title and will now hopefully go on to represent Ireland at the European championships where she’ll be a strong bet to return with a medal.”
Competing in the 57kgs class Crowley drew namesake and previous foe Kacie Delaney (Whitchurch BC) in the semi-final.
Having twice previously defeated her Dublin opponent, Crowley was full of confidence yet expected a very tough contest.
In the opening round Crowley landed with the better shots and out-fought her opponent to earn the first session. Delaney fought back gamely in the second, forcing Crowley into a close range battle.
However, in the third and final round Crowley kept the contest at range and landed with the heavier punches to earn a 5-0 unanimous points decision.
In the final Kaci Crowley faced the very strong and tough Amy McDonagh (Clan Nofa BC).
McDonagh started aggressively, but the good clean and heavy shots from Crowley soon had her subdued.
Crowley boxed at a higher tempo, outworked her opponent and landed with the better quality shots to comfortably take the first two rounds.
The final session was closer as McDonagh gamely tired to overturn the deficit but at the final bell Crowley was a clear winner again by unanimous decision 5-0.
The victory earned Kaci Crowley her third National title and put her in pole-position to represent Ireland at the European Schoolgirls Championships in Albena, Bulgaria.
On Sunday morning it was the turn of her younger sister Caoilfhionn Crowley to take to the ring in the Ulster Schoolgirls Championship final.
Caoilfhionn was pitted against Sarah Marie Duffy (Illies Golden Gloves BC) in the Girl One (Under 12s) 39kgs class.
Both combatants started fast and traded punches immediately.
However, Duffy with slight height and reach advantages reverted to using them to try and keep the contest at distance as Caoilfhionn applied constant pressure.
All three rounds were extremely close and both combatants landed with their fair share of shots. Therefore, it came as no surprise when a split decision was announced but agonizingly for Caoilfhionn Crowley the decision went in favor of her Donegal opponent 4-1.
Sean Crowley reflected further: “It just wasn’t to be for young Caoilfhionn. Her match was a very exciting contest for the fans and arguably she did enough in our eyes to win but we have no complaints.
“This is still only her first year of competitive boxing and she is improving all the time so now doubt she still one to watch for the future.”
The Erne Boxing Club advised that Kaci Crowley also weighed in for the Ulster championships at the weekend and claimed a club record breaking seventh Ulster title.
Kaci won the Girl 3 (Under 14s) - 57kgs title by way of walkover and now progresses to the National Schoolgirl finals.
The Erne favorite will be looking to win her fourth National crown if the competition schedule permits. “Kaci is very keen to defend her Schoolgirls title but due to being called up to the National squad to train for the Europeans it may not be possible to do both.” added Sean Crowley.
