In the Tailteann Games Inter Provincial Championship, held at a blustery SETU track in Carlow, Enniskillen Running Club athlete Annabel Morrison in a brave run, retained her all Ireland 3000m title, leading from gun to tape.

Annabel hit the accelerator in the last 500m to win from Ulster team mate Elsa Moore. The ERGS student can look forward to running for the Irish Schools team in the SIAB International to be held in Scotland in three weeks time.

The girls 3000m was followed by the boys 1500m. Enniskillen Running Club had two runners on the Ulster team - Jamie McDonnell and Harry McKenzie, who was the youngest boy in the race.

Both teammates worked together in the high quality field. Jamie, in only his fourth ever 1500m race, claimed third with the two Leinster lads just in front. A first all Ireland medal for the St Mary’s College student while Harry McKenzie of ERGS also had a terrific run to come sixth.

In the Boys 3000m race, St Michael’s athletes Frank Buchanan and Charle Rehill wore the white singlet of Ulster. Buchanan won his first All Ireland schools title a month ago over the same distance. but on this occasion it was his rivals who turned the tables with Harris claiming gold followed by O’Donaghue with Buchanan securing bronze. Rehill had a good run to come home sixth.

Ben Warnock of St Kevin’s College was just outside his PB of 1.58 to come fifth in the 800m race.

Meanwhile, Devenish College’s discus thrower Oliver Polak won a silver medal with a throw of 41.42 m. He will now join Annabel on the Irish Schools team at the SIAB Internationals in a few weeks time.

A tremendous day for schools athletics in the County with eight athletes from five schools selected to represent their province.
