Enniskillen Athletic 2-9 Enniskillen Rangers

Enniskillen Rangers consigned Enniskillen Athletic to Division 2 football with a rampant win at the Devenish College on Tuesday night.

Athletic needed a win to have any chance of survival but Rangers made no mistake as they kept up their push for this year’s league title leaving manager Micky Kerr pleased with his side’s performance.

“Good to get the three points,” said Kerr after the game. “Three points that were well deserved, I thought we were patient in the first half when Athletic sat deep, eventually ground them out and got the first goal and then a lucky enough second goal.

"To get the win and the three points that was the main objective before the game and that’s what we done. To get a few different goal scorers was pleasing. From my own point of view, I’m delighted.”

Enniskillen Athletic manager Darren Rodgers said: “Obviously disappointed, but we didn’t do enough to stay in the division. The league table doesn’t lie come the end of the season.

"It’s been a difficult year for a number of reasons, with a large number of players not able to commit.”

Rangers dominated the ball in the opening half with Athletic setting up defensively as goalkeeper James Maguire was called into action on a couple of occasions to make saves from long shots.

Kerr’s side eventually took the lead with around ten minutes to go before halftime as a ball into the box was converted at the back post by Jason Keenan and the same man made it 2-0 six minutes later as his cross curled into the net.

Athletic started the second half brightly as Emmet Cassidy got in behind the Rangers' back four to slot the ball into the bottom left corner.

They also then had a claim for a penalty as Rian McNally went down after goalkeeper Joel Peden’s challenge, but the shouts were waved away.

Willie Burleigh restored Rangers’ two-goal lead when he headed in a cross off the post and Joel Byrne then made it 4-1 as the floodgates opened for the league leaders.

Substitute Stuart Rainey grabbed a brace with the second from range before Rodgers pulled a goal back for Athletic from the penalty spot after Paul Coulter was taken down.

There was no let-up from Rangers as Jordan McClure curled into fine efforts with the second finding the top corner.

Keenan then completed his hat-trick in the final few moments to round off a ruthless showing in front of goal.
