Enniskillen athlete Mark Hoy enjoyed success at the Mary Peters Track on Tuesday night as he won the mile in a meet organised to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister running the first ever sub four minute mile.

Conditions were poor and while Mark was delighted to win, he was disappointed with his time.

Mark was followed home in third be training partner James Speight who clocked a time of 4 mins and 28 seconds.

“It was a wet, cold night,” explained Mark. “I won the race convincingly and ran a stadium record for the Mary Peters Track, but I am disappointed with my time of 4 mins and 19 seconds. Overall I am happy with how things went. Front running any race is tough but it’s ten times harder in driving wind and rain, like tonight.” Mark feels he is in the shape to run close to 4.05 for the distance but it just didn’t come together on the evening for him.

Helen Stockdale also competed in the ladies’ race securing an excellent third place finish.

Last Wednesday evening in Santry, Dublin, Mark opened up his 800m campaign and produced an excellent run to equal his personal best.

“I wasn’t expecting much, as the majority if my training so far this spring has been geared towards 1,500m with plans to drop to 800m in a few weeks. However, I ran an equal PB of 1 min and 51 seconds. This left me feeling excited for the summer ahead and to get down to doing some more speed work on the track to get my time down to below 1.50 and put me in the hunt for a National Senior podium,” revealed Mark.
