Following the successful weekend for Fermanagh athletes of all ages on the track in Belfast last weekend; it was off to the Antrim Forum on Sunday for more Ulster finals for Tommy Farrell’s Enniskillen Running Club juniors.

Edel Monaghan had a great run in Belfast the previous week, winning bronze over 800m.

On Saturday morning she was in her more familiar distance of 1500m. It was a tough field, including the current all Ireland 1,500m champion Amy Hamill and most of the other runners were Ulster medallists in the past.

Hamill strode out into a commanding lead on the first lap, never to be overtaken and the remaining runners were packed in behind. With a lap to go Edel and an East Down runner broke for home in search of silver. Racing down the home straight, Edel had to try to overtake on the outside and was pipped into third place by half a second. Nevertheless, in winning bronze she set a fantastic new PB of 4 minutes 58 seconds for 1500m! The Irvinestown girl has now qualified for two All-Ireland finals next month.

Aoife Farrell of ERC ran in the U14 15,00m race coming middle of the field. She bravely kept going until the end and will learn a lot from her experience.

Lucia Warnock moved up a distance to 1,500m a week after storming to silver medal in the 800m. The field was stretched by the eventual winner Olivia Nelson who raced to the front never to be overtaken.

This took the sting out of the 800m speed specialists like Lucia. The Tempo girl kept running until the line and was rewarded with a new PB over this distance. She can now focus her attention on the July All-Irelands over her favoured 800m distance.
