Nail biting, frustrating, on the edge of your seat just about covers this Ladies Zone match played out in the U.U. Hall, Enniskillen last Saturday with the Western ladies playing Lisburn Zone. The first half of the game got off to a good start on Mat 1 with Caroline Scott’s rink of Sarah MaVitty, Winnie Graydon and Rose Donnelly domineering their game by winning nine out of ten ends with the scoreline of 15–1. On Mat 2, the rink skipped by Ellen Brogan with Laura Lunny leading Gladys Dunlop second and Clare Brogan in third were 4–3 up after three ends then disaster struck on the fourth end with Western losing six shots and then losing one shot in the fifth end leaving then trailing 10–4. However, credit due to the rink as they kept their heads and went on to pick up eleven shots over the last five ends to win their game 15–11. Katrine Bradshaw’s rink of Margaret Nelson, Pauline Hannon and Rita Cranston on Mat 3 had a nip and tuck game against T Irwin’s rink from Lisburn. The Western ladies were winning 7–5 after nine ends but in the last end Western lost five shots losing the game 7–11. Now at half time Western were leading overall by 37–23. This left it all to play for in the second half of the game and boy did Lisburn come out fighting. On Mat 1, Jean Carson’s rink of Frances Cartwright, Anne Brian and Carmel McGovern were keeping it close until the sixth end when they were only trailing by four shots to five shots down but over the next four ends they lost a total of seven shots losing their game 4–12. Janet Brown’s rink of Ann Stewart, Ethna Maguire and Naomi Hassard were all square after five ends at 3–3/ On the sixth end Lisburn ladies picked up four shots but come the seventh end, Western also picked up four shots to level the game. On the eighth end Lisburn gained two shots, the ninth end Western two shots leaving it all level going into the final end. Then Lisburn got two shots to win this game 9–11. During these three final games the overall scoreline was creeping in favour of Lisburn with Esther Forster’s rink of Lisa MaVitty, Patricia Moohan and Patricia Bradshaw 7–2 up after four ends, only for the next five ends to see Lisburn winning ten shots to leave the overall scoreline sitting at 58 to 57 in favour of the visitors with the other two rinks having completed their games. The deciding final end of Esther’s game went right down to the last bowl to decide which zone was progressing to the quarter final stages of the Inter Zone competition. Western needed one shot to tie the game, two shots to win or three shots a bonus after M Corey the skip of Lisburn Zone threw her final bowl. Esther’s rink were lying three shots for the Western Ladies Zone team to progress to the next stages of the competition but the rink lost their game 10–12. Western Ladies now play Armagh Ladies Zone team who had an overwhelming win against East Antrim Zone, the game is to be played on January 4 in Richhill.
