The popular and well known pairing from Derryvullan Bowling club of Ian McElroy and Roly Nixon are this years winners of the Trevor Scott Memorial Pairs run by the Enniskillen Wellington Bowling Club.

This annual tournament attracted a large entry despite the adverse weather conditions and produced some very interesting and competitive games throughout.

The event culminated on Monday evening when eight pairs returned to compete for the coveted title and for some of the excellent prizes on offer.

In the first of the quarter finals, which was an all Wellington affair between Gary Burke and Ivor Armstrong, it was Gary who was accompanied by Norman Noble who dominated from the early stages and booked their semi final place convincingly without having to play the last two ends.

The youthful pairing of Michael McGrade, St Josephs and Niall Cox, Mullaghdun had a relatively easy passage against the Wellington pair of Alan Browne and Trevor Morrison, progressing to the semi final by a 9 shots to 4 scoreline.

In their quarter final game against Paul Wilson and Derek Kerr, the eventual winners Ian McElroy and Roly Nixon, went into an early lead and were 9 shots to 2 up after five ends had been played. Although Paul and Derek chalked up a three in the sixth, it was all too late with Ian and Roly deserving their semi final place by 11 shots to 5.

In the remaining game at the quarter final stage between John Quinn, accompanied by Rachel McDonnell from Donegal, against the Roslea husband and wife combination of P & M Cosgrove, it was the Donegal pair who eventually reached the next round. Although they were trailing by a single shot after the fifth end, John and Rachel collected a three followed by a two to run out easy winners.

In the first of the semis Gary Burke and Norman Noble were drawn against Ian McElroy and Roly Nixon and this game produced some excellent bowls with both pairs at their best. Although the Derryvullan pair went into a 5 shots to 1 early advantage, the Wellington duo hit back and came within a single shot, 5 shots to 6 at the end of the seventh end. In the last end Roly and Ian secured victory and a final place after collecting a single to win by 7 shots to 6.

The remaining semi turned out to be a very one sided affair with Michael McGrade and Niall Cox completely out bowling John Quinn and Rachel McDonnell, who won the tournament last year, and deservedly booking their final place by 9 shots to 1.

After a break for a superb supper the scene was set for the 2010 Trevor Scott Memorial pairs and the large group of spectators were not disappointed.

Michael and Niall got off to the perfect start and won the first three ends to take a four shot lead before Roly and Ian chalked up a two in the fourth. Michael and Niall, although collecting a single shot in the fifth, failed to improve on this and with Roly and Ian winning the remaining ends the game was over and the Derryvullan pair deservedly collecting the Trevor Scott Memorial title for the first time by 9 shots to 5.

Prior to the presentation of prizes Norman Noble Treasurer of the Wellington Bowling Club thanked all the bowlers for supporting their tournament with a special word of thanks to John Quinn and Rachell McDonnell for braving the elements and travelling all the way from Donegal to play in the finals. Norman thanked all the ladies for their invaluable work in providing the most welcome cuppa throughout the tournament. Norman also thanked the Scott family for their continuing support and assistance in helping the club make the tournament one of the most popular on the local circuit and to Ivor Armstrong the club secretary for organising the event.

The prizes were then presented to all the finalists by the late Trevor Scotts wife Caroline and his parents Joyce and Stewart Scott. The proceedings then came to an end with Roly Nixon, one of the winners, thanking the Wellington Club for their organising and stated how proud he was on winning the Trevor Scott Memorial Cup for the first time
