Enniskillen Rangers progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Impartial Reporter Mulhern Cup on Saturday with a 4-1 win over last season’s beaten finalists, Tummery Athletic.

Goals from Jarno Glass and Ryan Maguire had the ‘Gers two goals to the good at the break and Leigh Jones and Willie Burleigh added to the lead in the second half before Ryan Cunningham hit a late consolation goal for the away side.

The reward for Gordon Cutler’s outfit is a last eight clash with Lisbellaw United, the ‘Law having knocked Rangers out of the Junior Cup earlier in the season.

Saturday’s win, with so many young players in the side, pleased Cutler: “It was a good win for us, especially with five of our starting team Under 18, so to have beaten an experienced cup side like Tummery was great. I felt we played some of our best football of the season and we’re looking forward to the game against Lisbellaw,” he stated.

Rangers played into a strong breeze in the first half but they got off to the perfect start when they took the lead after ten minutes. Glass cut in from the left and let fly with a left footed effort that flew into the top corner to give the ‘Gers the early advantage.

Andy Johnston then had a half chance as the home side looked to double their lead while Glass broke from half way but was denied by James Colgan in the Tummery goal.

Tummery though were to come back into the game as they pressed for an equaliser although they failed to really test Alberto Garcia in the home goal, Cunningham firing wide the closest they came to levelling up matters.

With half time fast approaching, Rangers were to swoop for a crucial second to double their lead at the break. Johnston played in Ryan Maguire and he slotted home to gave the ‘Gers a two goal cushion at half time.

And Rangers were to put the game to bed in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Substitute Leigh Jones had a half volley that was well saved by Colgan but he was not to be denied just before the hour mark when good work from the tireless Johnston saw him force a mistake out of a Tummery defender with the ball falling to Jones who tapped into the empty net for 3-0.

The game was well and truly over soon after when Glass’ cross from the left was inch perfect for the inrushing Burleigh to head home from six yards.

Tummery, to their credit, never stopped trying and they pulled a goal back when Cunningham raced on to a ball over the top before slamming home.

Rangers had a late penalty shout when Johnston went down under a challenge from Colgan but the home appeals were waved away although it was not to be important as Rangers moved into the quarter-finals.
