In- form Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Michael McGovern, who was recently named in the Scottish Championship Team of the Year for the second time in three years, is hopeful that his Falkirk side can pip Hamilton and Dundee in the race for the Scottish Championship title.

Falkirk would be considered the outsiders in a tight finish to the league with only two points separating the three sides, with Hamilton a point ahead of Dundee and two ahead of Falkirk with two games to go.

Only the league winners secure automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership while the second, third and fourth placed teams will play off against the side second from bottom of the Premiership to decide on the other place.

Falkirk seemed out of the race a few weeks ago but they have come roaring back into contention in recent weeks and McGovern says that they are concentrating on taking maximum points from their final two games.

“We’ve won five games in a row. A few weeks ago we were nine points behind but now we are only two points behind although we are running out of games as there are only two left. We would rather be in their position than ours, they have the points on the board, so all we can do is go and try and win our last two games,” he said.

The former Enniskillen Town United player feels that this weekend’s games could be crucial with all three of the contenders away from home.

“The three teams who are at the top of the league are all away on Saturday so I think it is going to be an important day. It is a tough game for each of the three teams and there could be a bit of movement there. Obviously, we hope the other teams slip up but at the end of the day we can’t really affect what’s above us. If we can win our two games then at least we can say that we have done our bit,” he stated.

Falkirk do have the fall back of the play offs but that is not part of their thoughts at present.

“You have got the back up of the play offs but at this moment in time no-one is really talking about the play offs. We still have a chance of winning the league and our total focus is on that. Only when we are mathmatically unable to win the league will we start talking about the play offs,” he added.

McGovern was delighted to have been selected on the Team of the Year and was joined by four of his team-mates with the goalkeeper feeling that this is an indication of how strong the Falkirk side is. He would gladly swop that though for promotion.

“I think it shows you the strength of our team this season and I think there could have been one or two other players in the reckoning as well. It tells you that we have a good team and to have received this recognition from your fellow players is an honour. It is nice to get the personal awards and stuff but it goes without saying that the team comes first. The main prize for us is to get promotion and you would sacrifice all the personal accolades for that, he concluded.
