Irvinestown Wanderers are within touching distance of a return to the top flight of Fermanagh and Western football after results went their way last Saturday.

An emphatic 5-0 victory over Glebe United at the Bawnacre was made all the sweeter when they received news that Magheraveely had been beaten by Enniskillen Athletic.

Magheraveely were the only side who carried a threat to top two Wanderers and Enniskillen Santos and the upshot of last weekend’s results mean that Irvinestown need to secure only a point against Magheraveely this Saturday to ensure they will play Division One football next season.

“It was a good day for us with our win over Glebe and Magheraveely getting beaten by Athletic. It leaves us now needing a draw with Magheraveely this Saturday to secure promotion and if we can do that then it would be a great achievement for us. After that anything else is a bonus, we are currently four points ahead of Santos although they have two games in hand while we have to play each other before the end of the season. For us though the main concern is gaining promotion and we’ll be going out looking for the win against Magheraveely on Saturday,” said Wanderers joint manager Dermot McCann.

Having been in the top two for the vast majority of the season, promotion is no more than Irvinestown deserve and they were quickly into their stride against Glebe on Saturday as they looked to get the points on the board in their push for the top two.

Indeed, they had the ideal opportunity to open the scoring after only five minutes when the impressive Ronan Ormsby was taken down in the box but Gary Maguire’s spot kick crashed off the post.

Irvinestown, who had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half, did not have long to wait though for the opener as they took the lead in the 12th minute. Maguiure’s free kick from the right was met by Conor McGuigan and he slotted home for 1-0.

Wanderers continued to control the encounter and on the half hour mark they doubled their money as Rory Cassidy and Kevin Swift combined to find Liam Murphy and his accurate ball between two defenders was latched on to by Ormsby who steered his effort to the corner.

Glebe did have a 20 yard shot from Shane McGrory that was comfortably saved by TJ McMulkin in the Wanderers goal while at the other end Maguire and Ormsby had chances but failed to capitalise on them.

Glebe started the second half brightly with Barry Hegarty firing over when he should have scored and Gary Houston had a wind assisted effort that flew narrowly over the bar.

It was Irvinestown though who were to go on and put the game to bed as they grabbed their third, Ormsby’s free kick fumbled into the net by away goalkeeper Chris Burke.

Irvinestown then introduced Christopher Lyons and he had an immediate impact as he rifled home a 20 yard free kick to make it 4-0.

And Lyons made it 5-0 after the outstanding Liam Murphy was denied a deserved goal by Burke only for Maguire to play the ball back in for Lyons to tuck away.
