Irvinestown Wanderers produced pretty much the biggest shock of round two of the Impartial Reporter Mulhern Cup as they defeated highflying Division One side Beragh Swifts.

In fairness, the Wanderers are enjoying a pretty good season themselves having just secured promotion back to the top flight and on this performance they are sure to be a force to be reckoned with.

There was little between the two teams on the day and it took a special goal from the mercurial Gary Maguire to separate the sides as he broke in from the left, beat two players and curled the ball into the corner of the net past Richard Moore in the Swfits goals.

This was winger Maguire’s 26th goal of the season and joint manager Demot McCann was delighted with the win.

“To be honest, the cup is a bonus for us,” he explained.

“In saying that we are delighted with the win and I don’t think anyone will want to come to play us in the next round. We are hoping for a home draw and will take it from there.” He agrees that input of Maguire has been crucial to their fine season.

“Gary has been in brilliant form and it was a superb goal That is 26 goals from Gary and he is a winger so that is some return. Ronan Ormsby also had a great game and while our keeper was a little busier, I think we deserved to win. It gives us a good idea of what to expect next year, Beragh are a good team.” McCann also hopes that the Wanderers go on and win the Division Two title.

“We have three games left including Santos at the Bawnacre which could well be the decider. We have plenty left to play for and all the boys are looking forward to some big games,” concluded McCann.

In a tight game, it was Beragh that had the best chance to open the scoring in the first half when David Fulton’s effort was well saved by TJ Mulkin while it was the second half before the Wanderers really tested Moore.

The excellent Ronan Ormsby headed over the bar before his deflected shot was superbly tipped around the post by Moore as the game remained deadlocked at 0-0.

Michael Brown then almost won the game for Beragh but McMulkin saved low down to his left and extra-time was then needed.

It was in the first period that Maguire pounced with a superb goal worthy of winning any game as Wanderers progressed to quarter-finals keeping their ambitious hopes of a league and cup double well and truly alive.
