Fermanagh Premier squad enjoyed a good run out against a Monaghan/Cavan Select and Down Premier sides at Monaghan United’s ground at the weekend.

The Premier side began their day with a promising 3-0 win over the Monaghan/Cavan outfit but tiredness set in after they only had a 30 minute break before their game against Down who ran out 6-1 winners in the end.

“The boys tired in the second game because we only had 30 minutes between the two games whereas Down had a longer break having played in the first game but overall I got a number of good performances from the boys so I would be happy enough with that. I thought we played well in the first game against Cavan/Monaghan and we could and maybe should have scored more than the three goals we got,” said Premier manager Robbie Walker.

Fermanagh started that opening game brightly Eoghan Curran forcing the goalkeeper into a good early stop while Conall Quinn saw an effort fly narrowly over the crossbar.

The Fermanagh pressure continued and Kyle Coalter pulled a wonderful save out of the home goalkeeper before the Erne lads eventually made the breakthrough in the 25th minute. Jordan Woods, Philip Beacom, Caolan Ward and Conall Quinn were all involved in the build up before Curran picked up the ball on the left and cut inside before firing home with the outside of the boot to the corner.

And soon after they doubled their advantage as Dylan Crawford, Quinn and Ward were all involved before Curran set up Coalter to slot home.

Monaghan/Cavan did have a number of chances to pull a goal back before half time but the Fermanagh defence stood firm as they maintained their two goal advantage at the break.

Fermanagh again started the second half on the front foot and 12 minutes into the half they added to their lead as good movement from Jacob Britton from a free kick saw him create space to head home for 3-0.

Further chances arrived for Walker’s side to Coalter and Curran but they failed to take these as the game finished 3-0.

It was then a quick turnaround for Fermanagh as they got ready to face Co. Down.

However, Fermanagh made the perfect start as Conall Quinn broke from midfield before unleashing a wonderful 25 yard strike that gave the goalkeeper no chance to make it 1-0.

And they went on to dominate the opening 15 minutes as further opportunities fell to the likes of Aaron Graham, Ward and Curran with Callum Frempong a lively presence but they failed to convert.

Fermanagh were then hit on the counter as Down swooped to level things and five minutes before half time the Mourne side grabbed the lead.

Fermanagh had a chance to level matters before the break but Graham’s header from a Curran ball was at the goalkeeper as Down went in at the interval in front.

The Erne side were to lose their shape in the opening period of the second half and Down capitalised to score twice to make it 4-1 and when Fermanagh pushed to try and get back into the game they were caught out as Down netted a fifth. The Mourne side then wrapped things up late on with a sixth to secure a 6-1 win.
