Ederney got their first win of the campaign on Saturday evening, away to St Patrick’s. This was the first league outing for the Donagh men while Ederney got underway the previous week and that game time proved beneficial, said St Pat’s Manager, Fergal Wray: “They (Ederney) had a game under their belt and were up to speed. It was our first game so they had a bit of an advantage.” Reflecting on their performance, he said; “The two goals they got were soft and we we dippointed with that. Overall though, they probably deserved to win. We would have been happy if we could have came away with a draw.” “In the second half we didn’t get in around the breaks and let them have a platform to build on. We need to tighten up in defence as well,” added Fergal.

Ederney Manager, Iggy Gallagher admitted afterwards: “It could have went either way but it’s pleasing to get the first win on board.” St Pat’s were without Eamon Maguire, Fergal Reilly and Kevin Curran, on Saturday. The Donagh men had the wind advantage in the first half but went in trailing by two points at half time. The teams traded scores early on, with Marty McGrath, Stephen McElrone and Darren McCusker all kicking points for the visitors, whilst Pat Cadden hit two for the home side.

With 10 minutes played Enda Ferris got on the end of a well worked move and unleashed a shot to the back of the net, to put Ederney ahead by four points. Cadden continued to chip away at the lead but Paul McCusker responded with three points (1 free) for Ederney to keep their noses in front.

On 20 minutes, they got their second goal. A move involving Finbarr Gillen and Paul McCusker played in wing half-back Aaron Dennison and he made no mistake. However, the Donagh men continued to work hard and were rewarded five minutes before half time. Jason Cadden capitalised on a mistake in the Ederney defence. He passed to Joe McGovern who found Michael Montgomery and he finished to the net.

St. Pat’s were always chasing this game after conceding the early goal and in the second half it was no different. Ederney hit four unanswered points with Paul and Darren McCusker on target from play and frees.

Now, with a six points advantage it looked like the game was in the bag for Ederney. But there was to be another twist when St. Pat’s got a second goal. Again, Ederney were overturned in defence and the ball was moved up field by St. Pat’s for Brian McDermott to finish with a goal. This brought the deficit back to two points and they had a chance to bring it back to the minimum but this was spurned and instead Ederney with down the field and Paul McCusker kicked a point.

The teams traded scores as the clocked ticked down. Finbarr Gillen and Peter Gormley added points for Ederney while Pat Cadden, Gary Maguire and substitute Ryan Kelly all tagged on scores for the home side but they could never close the gap and Ederney ran out winners.

Best for St Pat’s was Pat Cadden who finished with 0-08, Paul Cosgrove in midfield and Gary Maguire also had a fine performance. For Ederney, Aaron Dennison, Marty McGrath and Paul McCusker all performed well.
