Tempo followed up their win over Erne Gaels by recording a seven point victory over Newtownbutler on Saturday evening.

Ryan Keenan bagged both of the Maguires goals as they raced into a 2-07 to 1-03 half time advantage and they were able to keep a comfortable gap in the second half to maintain their 100 percent start to the campaign.

Tempo’s Aidan Breen feels that it is important to put points on the board early in the season.

“We’re very happy to get the win as we always knew Newtownbutler would put up a tough fight. With so many games coming up thick and fast it’s great to get some early points on the board.” Tempo were to open up a two point lead at the start of the game with a Darryl Keenan free and a well worked point from Ryan Keenan before Brendy McBrien slotted over for Newtown to make it 0-02 to 0-01 after just five minutes.

Tempo then were to hit Newtownbutler for 1-02 in the space of just six minutes to leave daylight early on between the sides. Ryan Keenan struck for a decisive goal after good work by Rory Foy, and this was followed up by a point apiece from Declan McCarron and Rory Foy to leave it 1-04 to 0-01 after 11 minutes.

Newtownbutler hit back with 1-01 in the space of a minute when James Maguire hit the back of the net following good approach work by Jarlath Jackman and McBrien, while Connor Beggan lofted over a point from an acute angle and all of a sudden Newtownbutler had dragged themselves back into the game.

Tempo though were to finish the half much stronger and another goal from Ryan Keenan was sandwiched in by points from PJ Rodgers and Darryl Keenan (2) to leave the home side leading 2-07 to 1-03 at half time.

The other Newtonbutler score came from a free supplied by the accurate McBrien.

Tempo opened up the second half with a trio of well taken points from Darryl Keenan, Ryan Keenan and Declan McCarron to push themselves well clear but Newtownbutler hit back with a superb goal coming from the diminutive McBrien to make it 2-10 to 2-03.

The sides exchanged further scores with McBrien, who finished the game with 1-04 and Jarlath Jackman registering for Newtown while Thomas Campbell replied for the home side as they made it 2-12 to 2-04 with 10 minutes to play.

McBrien and Jackman added further points but Tempo finished with a flurry of well taken points from the highly accurate Darryl Keenan, Campbell and Breen to run out 2-14 to 2-07 winners at the end.

Newtownbutler’s Jarlath Jackman was disappointed to come away from the game with nothing: “It’s a disappointing result, but Tempo were always going to be tough after the year they had last season. We had our chances to get back into the game but unfortunately we didn’t take them. We still have key players to come back into the squad so we will be looking to get back on track this weekend with the double header.”
