Devenish suffered their first home defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon. After taking a six point lead early in the first half, they were guilty of sitting back and letting Ederney into the game.

The consequence of which was defeat for the Garrison men while Ederney welcomed their first win in five games with open arms.

Darren Brady opened the scoring for Devenish before Paul McCusker replied with a point. John O’Flanagan got a second for the Garrison men before Chris O’Brien netted their first goal on 12 minutes. A high ball in was fisted to the net by O’Brien, to open up a three point lead.

The visitors hit back with two points from Paul McCusker and Enda Ferris but Devenish were controlling matters, as Terry O’Flanagan netted a second goal. John O’Flanagan’s free caused some confusion in the Ederney defence and Terry was on hand to fist the ball to the net, to give his side a 2-03 to 0-04 lead.

With the home side cruising, Ederney began to up their game and hit 1-05 without reply. Four points from the McCusker brothers, Paul and Darren, as well as a point from Marty McGrath, left them trailing by a single point.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Paul McCusker finished with a fine individual goal, rounding two defenders before burying it in the net, to leave the score 2-04 to 1-09 at the break.

In the second half, Ederney continued to pick off points through the McCusker brothers Paul and Darren. John O’Flanagan, Jason Love and Chris O’Brien responded as Devenish bid to keep themselves in the game. With the home side trailing by only three points, Conall Cullen killed the game off as a contest when he netted a second goal for Ederney.

There were further points from substitute Declan Rasdale, Terry O’Flanagan and Darren Brady late in the game but not before Ederney got another goal. Enda Ferris was on the end of a cross from Darren McCusker and he fisted to the net to help the visitors to a deserved victory.

Best for Ederney were Darren, Declan and Paul McCusker. Marty McGrath showed well at midfield and in defence Conan Cullen and Peter Gormley produced solid performances. For Devenish, Barry Mulrone, Jason Love and the O’Flanagan brothers, John and Terry were most impressive on the day.

Devenish Manager, Bart O’Brien was disappointed afterwards: “We started well but the lads thought we were going to win handy, when we went six points up and we allowed them back in. Up front, Paul McCusker was very sharp for Ederney and the goal before half-time was a big bonus to them.

Ederney were in good form and Marty McGrath won a lot of ball and that was the main reason they got back in the game,” concluded O’Brien.
