For all of but the top level golfer the season is well and truly and over and it will be several long dark months before a ball is struck again in competition.

However, if you are keen to improve next year here’s some useful ideas on how to plan and prepare, making the most of the winter period.

Retain or improve your flexibility The chances are you are nowhere near as flexible as you think or need to be to reach your maximum potential.

Having a physical screen to assess areas that could be improved can show huge benefits regardless of your age or current standard.

Yoga is a great method for not only increasing flexibility but also balance and coordination.

Take Lessons Iron out any poor habits you have picked up or work on aspects of your game that you have identified require to be improved.

Winter is the perfect time to introduce new elements as it gives you the opportunity to get used to them.

Work on Your Game Driving ranges aren’t ideal but they are better than nothing and may be the only option available depending on the weather. For the best results work towards S.M.A.R.T targets (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Orientated) Introduce New Clubs whether it’s a driver, wedge, putter or the whole set, winter allows time to test and get to know your new equipment.

Rory’s back on song Two weeks ago we touched on the fact that Rory McIlroy was back swinging well again, well young McIlroy duly obliged for us last week. As he has been striping his golf ball for the past couple of months, it was only a matter of time and a few favorable results before the 24-year-old’s confidence, badly drained during a dismal season, would be fully replenished.

McIlroy displayed all his killer instincts last week to secure the Australian Open at Royal Sydney last Sunday. In doing so he denied Adam Scott from securing a first ever Triple Crown of Golf in Australia.

It won’t be surprising in the least if he eclipses tournament host Tiger Woods and defending champion Graeme McDowell in this week’s Northwestern Mutual Challenge at Sherwood Country Club.

At 6/1 it may not represent great value but there is a limited field and don’t be surprised if Rory doesn’t continue winning.
