One of the areas where top professionals differ greatly from club golfers is knowing exactly how far they hit each club. Not only that but the gaps between each iron are very consistent.

If you are having trouble getting that perfect gap between your clubs, the first thing to do is have them checked by a PGA Professional to ensure the lofts are correct.

Each iron should have about four-degrees difference between the lofts, which equates to approx. 10-15 yards.

With this done a simple method to get a better appreciation of how far you carry each club is to find out how far you hit one.

Using a six or a seven-iron select 30-40 balls, ideally of the same type and condition.

It is advisable to try and do this when you are hitting the ball well and in conditions that are not excessive in either wind or temperature.

Once all the balls have been hit a group should have formed.

If you don’t own a GPS or range finder, pace out from where you were hitting to the middle of the group, this will give you an indication of how far you carry that club.

If you then add or subtract 12 yards for each subsequent club you shouldn’t be too far away with how far they will fly.

With this improved knowledge it is then advisable to select a club that when struck correctly will carry the yardage to the back of the green.

In theory even if you strike it perfectly you will only be at the back of the green!

European Tour: World Number 18 Charl Schwartzel and defending champion Richard Sterne will both aim to claim their third Joburg Open titles and continue South Africa’s dominance of the event when they tee up at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club this week.

With few of the top players competing Schwartzel must have a great chance to add to his tally.

PGA Tour The PGA Tour returns to California’s coastline for the AT& T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Like the Humana Challenge, professionals will play 54 holes across three courses - Pebble Beach, Monterey Peninsula and Spyglass Hill - before the top 60 return to Pebble Beach on Sunday to do battle for the title.

All three courses measure less than 7,000 yards and while both Pebble and Spyglass do play to a par of 72, power isn’t really a factor here even if Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson together account for three of the last five renewals.

However this week it could be worth following Jason Day at 16/1.Day has been playing well over the last few weeks and has previous course form to contend this week. As an each way alternative Trevor Immelman at 150/1 is tempting.
