The ability to consistently get close from greenside bunkers is something the world’s best make look ridiculously easy.

It would be fair to say this is generally not the case for the majority of club golfers, who more often than not simply happy just to get out of the sand.

Incorporating the following key fundamentals will increase your chances of getting the ball closer more frequently and lower your scores.

Stand square: Many players stand exaggeratedly open, simplify things by having your body parallel to your target line Ball forward: The ball should be in line with the inside of the left heel (for right handed players) Open the face: To do this correctly the club should be rotated in the hands exposing the back edge of the club to the sand. It is important to note the shaft will now appear to lean back (the top of the grip will be behind the ball).

Widen the stance, add more knee flex & lower the hands/shaft: These adjustments will affect the angle of attack and lower the swing arc Turn the left foot out: It will feel as if it is pointing at the target and will reduce excessive movement so harmful to bunker shots Don’t pick up and cut across: Often this method, which leads to poor consistency, goes hand in hand with standing open. All too often it too is over exaggerated.

Maintain the loft: The loft at address should be returned to the ball at impact. A good way to achieve this is to think about replicating the shaft angle that you started with.

Another good drill to get the feeling of how the club is delivered correctly, is to separate or split your hands apart slightly at address. This helps to ensure they don’t cross over through impact and the bounce of the club works as it is intended.
