It would be fair to say that with their low loft and long shaft fairway woods are the most demanding clubs for club golfers to hit off the deck.

As the margins for error are so small with these clubs it is critical the fundamentals are correct and the right choices are made before attempting to play them.

Following this checklist to give you the opportunity to get the very best out of these clubs and lower your scores in the process.

1. How is your lie?

The lack of loft on the club head means the ball needs to be sitting well to ensure you have every chance of producing a solid strike. Ensure your ball is on an even lie as any sort of side slope will increase the difficulty.

This is especially true of downslopes.

Ideally the ball should be sitting up and no attempt should be made to hit from bare lies, divots or when the ball is sitting down below the bottom of the clubface.

2. Check your ball position All too often club players have the ball far too far forward in the stance in an attempt to sweep the ball away. Play the ball in line with the logo on your left chest (right handed players) and you will achieve the desired as well as a more consistent contact.

3. Trust the loft Another problem occurs when any attempt is made to help the ball in the air as it invariably leads to leaning back on the shot during the downswing.

The consequence of doing this is generally topped or thin shots which don’t go in the air and so the cycle continues.

To avoid this make sure you finish with your weight on the left leg (right handers). Furthermore and as demonstrated by many of today’s top professionals it is also okay to take a divot with a fairway wood, as long as it is after the ball. Trying to do this will also help to stop falling back.

4. Stay relaxed The tendency when faced with long shots is to tense up to try and hit the ball harder. Allowing your arms to stay relaxed will not only improve your tempo but increase the speed which you swing, allowing you to hit the ball probably further than you have before.
