The 143rd Open starts today and the return of Tiger Woods will no doubt please many of the sponsors and golfing public. The American has fond memories of the course as he won his 11th major in 2006 at Royal Liverpool– no one knows what to expect from him this week however.

Justin Rose has been installed as favourite by many bookies after he won two events on the bounce – the Quicken Loans National and the Scottish Open. His win in Aberdeen should do wonders for his confidence as the links style course played similarly to Royal Liverpool.

Last year’s winner, Phil Mickelson, won the Scottish Open before lifting the Claret Jug for the first time but Lefty has struggled for form in 2014 making him an outsider for the championship, however he did show glimpses of form during last week’s Scottish Open and one would still expect him to be bang in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Rory McIlroy is still struggling on Fridays as the Northern Irishman played himself out of contention at the Scottish Open after leading following the opening round.

His win at Wentworth and the fact he grew up playing links style courses means he is still seen as one of the favourites by most punters, however he seems to struggle with the so called knock down shot especially when the wind blows.

The Players and US Open champion Martin Kaymer is in the form of his life in 2014 and it shouldn’t be a surprise if the German adds a third major to his list of accomplishments. Since reverting to the swing which took him to No.1 in the world, Kaymer has been in blistering form and won the second major of the year at a canter.

To thrive at Hoylake, length is not a necessity as Woods proved when he only hit the big stick once on route to victory in 2006. He also never went into the numerous bunkers which litter the fairway and surround the greens – they are treacherous and need to be avoided.

Staying in play and hitting fairways in regulation is the order of the day. If the wind gets up then controlling ball flight will be of paramount importance.

It’s a complete test of every golfer’s game and the winner will need to be able to do a little bit of everything.

Two players who have been playing well recently and despite not having the power of most of their fellow competitors are Luke Donald and Zack Johnson. Both players are priced at 50/1 offering decent each-way value.
