Garry Jennings has set his sights on reclaiming the Irish Tarmac Championship title, starting with victory on this weekend’s Galway International Rally.

The Kesh driver had a disappointing campaign in 2014 and although he recovered to finish second overall in the series, he will be hoping to go one better this time around.

“We plan to knuckle down and do the first few rounds of the championship and see how it goes and see how we get on,” said Garry. “It would be nice to be up there and maybe get a couple more international wins under my belt.” Last season Garry was locked in a battle with Declan Boyle for victory on the Galway Rally, with a brief off road excursion costing him any chance of a victory. He had to settle for second on that occasion, and it is unlikely to be a straight forward event this season either with treacherous snow and ice covered road conditions likely to present a daunting challenge.

“I did the recce on Sunday and the stages were pure ice,” said Garry. “I don’t know what the rally is going to be like, but it was a death trap last weekend with cars off the road just going to the stages. If the rally is on I will be going no bother, but it would be a hard rally for everybody if its like that. Its very difficult to know where a road is frozen and where it is not frozen. Its not as if it is snow that you can see, but its black ice. At 3 o’clock on Sunday the sun was out and it was still frozen. The problem is anyone with the right tyres could walk away with it, but we haven’t got the right tyre and I won’t be looking for them.” Garry has not contested a rally since the Ulster Rally in summer last year, but he was testing his Subaru last weekend and he is happy that the car should be competitive. “We did a couple of set up changes on Saturday morning and it seemed to help the car a lot,” said Garry. “We changed a few differential settings over the winter and it felt good. We will look forward to it. It’s a good entry. It is as good as it has been in a couple of years. There are a lot of different names and new machinery this year.” Garry starts the event at number two behind reigning champion Declan Boyle, with Eugene Donnelly and Donagh Kelly also likely to feature in the battle for victory.
