After a spectacular 2015/16 season, Enniskillen Rugby Club now begins to lay the foundations for a new season and gets ready to take to the training field once again in preparation, and a stern challenge ahead as the 1st XV return to Kukri Qualifying One.
After proving themselves more than capable of competing against higher league competition last season, the Club are undoubtedly looking to consolidate their inclusion in Q1 as they return to top flight Junior Club rugby.
The club is ably supported this season as former player Mr Billy Mulligan of Currency Xtra has extended his sponsorship to the Club as main sponsor for 2016/17 once again.
President Norman Richmond commented on the crucial role of sponsorship in a small rural club.
“Local sponsorship is essential in helping maintain the running of the Club and we all wish Billy and Currency Xtra continued success as he recently celebrated 10 years in business serving the community well.”
Norman is clearly excited about the upcoming season, believing that this team is now ready to compete against the best Junior Clubs in Ulster.
While somehow doubling as both club coach and president last year, Norman now steps away from the 1st XV to focus on running the club in his second term.
The mens section is sure to be in good hands as this week saw second row stalwart David Buchanan appointed as Club Captain for the season, a thoroughly deserved opportunity and a natural selection to follow on from last years Club Captain Alan Wilkinson.
Richmond commented on David’s ability both on and off the pitch.
“David’s a modest and well respected player within the Club who week in and week out leaves nothing on the pitch.
“He was rewarded last season with a long overdue selection to the Ulster Juniors side and I think that experience will pay dividends when he takes the reins this year,” said Richmond.
Norman also commented on the other big appointment at the opening of the new season as Willie Gibson, past club captain and prominent assistant coach last year, was appointed head coach for the 2016/17 season.
“I’m glad to see Willie returning to the Club, his coaching pedigree is strong and I believe he can take the Senior Club to the next level.
“Last year Willie returned to the Club in an advisory role and he worked on some of the technical aspects of the game with good success.
“I’m also really pleased to say that Stephen Welsh will assist Willie this season, Stephen worked with me over the last two years and brings a lot to the club and to the game.”
As a Club, Enniskillen continues to stand out in Ulster for punching above it’s weight domestically as a small rural club, and even more so in it’s ability to make rugby available across the full spectrum of membership.
The Senior Men’s Club continues to field three teams as well as a Senior Ladies team which also triumphed last year winning their League.
The youth teams continue to flourish as they field teams from U12-U18 in both male and female, the under-12 girls having just been established last season, as well as a vibrant mini section that encompasses all the younger age groups.
The Enniskillen Elks has also been in place for two seasons now with assistance from some excellent volunteers at Enniskillen, and enables young people with various disabilities to enjoy the game of tag rugby.
With the new order in place and a spectacular previous season to live up to, there’s plenty of anticipation about what the future holds at Mullaghmeen. Senior mens pre-season training will commence July 14 at 7pm.
