Chelsey Wilson’s return to competition has yielded two more gold medals, with victory in the 100 metre and 200 metre back crawl events at the Irish Short Course Championships in Lisburn. Competing against the best swimmers throughout Ireland the Fermanagh swimmer took top spot in two events, and admits she was surprised to complete the double.

“I was quite confident on the 200,” she admitted, “but I was quite surprised I won the 100 because I’m more of a middle distance swimmer than a sprinter.” Chelsey’s comeback is progressing better than even she expected and she has been delighted with her times after embarking on a more intensive training programme than ever before.

“I am about three seconds faster over 200 than I was before I stopped,” she revealed. “I’m doing double the hours (in training) and it’s paying off. I feel fitter than ever really and hopefully whenever it goes to long course season next year I can get some good times. I have my eye on a time but we will see how it goes. I really don’t want to say too much in case it doesn’t happen!” Chelsey’s next competitive outing is not until February, but she will not be taking it easy over the festive period as she aims for yet more medals. “It’s just hard training until then,” she said. “I’ll probably just take Christmas Day off and maybe New Years Eve or New Years Day and that will be it. That’s all I want.”
